Admission Control and Interference Management in Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study two important aspects to make dynamic spectrum access work in practice: the admission policy of secondary users (SUs) to achieve a certain degree of quality of service and the management of the interference caused by SUs to primary users (PUs). In order to limit the forced termination probability of SUs, we evaluate the Fractional Guard Channel reservation scheme to give priority to spectrum handovers over new arrivals. We show that, contrary to what has been proposed, the throughput of SUs cannot be maximized by configuring the reservation parameter. We also study the interference caused by SUs to PUs. We propose and evaluate different mechanisms to reduce the interference, which are based on simple spectrum access algorithms for both PUs and SUs and channel repacking algorithms for SUs. Numerical results show that the reduction can be of one order of magnitude or more with respect to the random access case. Finally, we propose an adaptive admission control scheme that is able to limit simultaneously the forced termination probability of SUs and what we define as the probability of interference. Our scheme does not require any configuration parameters beyond the probability objectives. Besides, it is simple to implement and it can operate with any arrival process and distribution of the session duration.

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks
With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...
متن کاملResource Management in Cognitive Radio Networks
In the last decade, the world has witnessed rapid increasing applications of wireless networks. However, with the fixed spectrum allocation policy that has been used since the beginning of the spectrum regulation to assign different spectrum bands to different wireless applications, it has been observed that most of the allocated spectrum bands are underutilized. Therefore, if these bands can b...
متن کاملA Survey on Dynamic Spectrum Access via Cognitive Radio: Taxonomy, Requirements, and Benefits
Conventionally, interference protection among radio spectrum users is guaranteed through a policy of spectrum licensing that provides exclusive access to licensed users. However, as it is becoming extremely difficult to satisfy the growing demand for radio spectrum with this conventional policy, a flexible policy that can improve radio spectrum access and utilization without causing interferenc...
متن کاملProviding Secondary Access in a Cellular Network
Most wireless systems receive a license that gives them exclusive access to a block of spectrum. Exclusivity guarantees adequate quality of service, but it also leads to inefficient use of spectrum. Even when the license holder is idle, no other device can use the spectrum. This paper explores an alternative paradigm for secondary access to spectrum, where a secondary device can transmit when a...

Recently, operators have resorted to femtocell networks to enhance indoor coverage and increase system capacity. Nevertheless, to successfully deploy such solution, efficient resource-allocation algorithms and interference mitigation techniques should be deployed. The new applications delivered by operators require large amounts of network bandwidth. Although, some customers may want to pay mor...
